Bruce Sostek is the Chair of Thompson & Knight's Intellectual Property Section. He focuses his practice on intellectual property, technology, complex commercial litigation, and IP and business counseling. He has tried cases involving patent, trademark, and copyright infringement; theft of trade secrets; unfair competition; and other intellectual property concerns in federal courts throughout the country, at the International Trade Commission, and on appeal to the Federal Circuit Court of Appeals. He is actively involved in media, sports, and entertainment, having represented several prominent area sports teams. Bruce also counsels clients on the identification, valuation, licensing, and litigation of intellectual property assets and on how to use intellectual property to advance strategic business objectives.

Bruce is a member of the American College of Trial Lawyers and has been listed among the "500 Leading Lawyers in America" by Lawdragon.  He was named the Dallas Technology Law "Lawyer of the Year” in 2016 and 2014 by The Best Lawyers in America® and is regularly listed in Chambers USA "Leaders in Their Field," Texas Super Lawyers®, and as a Best Lawyer in Dallas by D Magazine. Experience

  • Represented a major semiconductor company in a Section 337 action before the International Trade Commission involving seven patents with a seven-month time frame between initiation of the investigation and trial with a resulting finding of no violation by the ALJ; the ITC affirmed on appeal to the Federal Circuit

  • Represented one of the world's largest semiconductor manufacturers in contemporaneous litigation matters filed in separate forums involving 13 patents pertaining to microelectronics, video, and telecommunications technology

  • Represented a manufacturer of microelectronics devices against claims of patent infringement of a Chinese invention related to a process for making Power MOSFET devices; favorable judgment affirmed by the Federal Circuit

  • Represented several manufacturers and retailers in claims brought by the Lemelson Foundation Partnership for alleged infringement of machine vision and auto identification patents pertaining to visual inspection in manufacturing and the use of scanning bar code reading technology

  • Defended a prominent National Football League team against copyright claims related to the use of photographs in game day and season programs; also represented prominent National Basketball Association coaches in proceedings with the NBA

  • Defended a regional athletic footwear and clothing franchisor against trademark and trade dress infringement claims brought by a national retail athletic shoe chain

  • Represented a prominent microelectronics company and a start-up semiconductor manufacturer in the use of "have made rights" in a patent license as a defense to claims of patent infringement for the manufacture, use, and sale of X86 microprocessor chips; favorable judgment affirmed by the Federal Circuit

  • Represented prominent semiconductor company against alleged infringement of patent involving the use of microprocessors in combination with off-chip memory; judgment affirmed by the Federal Circuit

  • Represented plaintiff in several patent infringement cases involving telephone dialer chips and static random access memory (SRAMs) in actions before the International Trade Commission (Section 337 proceedings) to preclude importation and sale of infringing telephone dialers and computer memory products

  • Represented plaintiff in patent infringement action involving the use of polyethylene lenses for the collection and focusing of passive infrared rays in motion detectors and other sensing devices

  • Defended high technology company against claims of trademark infringement and dilution by invalidating a federally registered and incontestable trademark related to electromechanical devices on grounds of genericness; summary judgment affirmed by the Sixth Circuit
