Insurance

Thompson & Knight serves insurance industry clients by combining the Firm's traditionally superior corporate, finance, estate planning, tax, transactional, and litigation skills with decades experience of working closely on administrative and regulatory matters with the Texas Department of Insurance and numerous other state and federal agencies. Attorneys from a variety of our practice groups collaborate to provide insurance clients with comprehensive counsel.

The strength of Thompson & Knight's ongoing insurance industry representation can be seen in the breadth of our client base. We have served as counsel for some of the largest insurance companies as well as some of the largest insurance agencies in the U.S. Our attorneys also represent a number of insurers based in other countries, including the largest property and casualty insurer in Mexico doing business in the United States. We represent both carriers and agencies in analyzing the legal aspects of new product and program development, and structuring and implementation of strategic alliances and marketing and distribution initiatives. Our assignments often extend into related areas, from complex structured insurance products to premium finance, to investment advisory and brokerage services, to life settlement and other satellite businesses. We also represent international insurers and holding companies in their U.S. operations; for example, we helped the largest Mexican insurer form its Texas subsidiary, and we are currently representing a Bermuda-based holding company in its U.S. insurance business and a Nevis-domiciled reinsurance company in arbitration of a reinsurance treaty dispute.

Our attorneys represent these and many other insurance and reinsurance companies and agencies in corporate and regulatory matters, finance, transactional work (including public and private equity investments), litigation, strategic planning, acquisitions, divestitures, joint ventures and other strategic alliances, employment, employee benefits, and executive compensation. Both insurers and policyholders routinely engage us to evaluate insurance coverage in questions of errors and omissions, agent misrepresentation claims, and "bad faith" lawsuits.
