From tax and transactional issues to intellectual property rights to ownership disputes, members of the art community regularly encounter increasingly difficult challenges regarding the art market. Thompson & Knight’s art law team has a keen understanding of the legal issues that exist in this complex arena. We are equipped to provide our clients with experienced counsel in a wide array of areas including counseling and representation on issues related to taxation; estate planning; sales and commission agreements; consignment and exhibition agreements; copyright protection; and title disputes, among other art-related issues. Members of our art law team frequently lecture on the intersection of art and the law.
Our experienced team of art law attorneys is strongly rooted in the arts community, making Thompson & Knight uniquely qualified to handle all types of art-related issues and disputes. For example, Michael Heinlen has a Ph.D. in Art History, taught Medieval and Northern Renaissance Art History for several years at the University of North Texas, and is a frequent speaker on various art law topics. In addition, Michael and Jane Brandt, another member of Thompson & Knight’s art law team, own an art gallery in Dallas—JM Gallery—specializing in works on paper and sculpture. Our attorneys also are members of Arts Counsel Texas, a nonprofit organization aimed at providing a bridge between the legal and artistic communities of North Texas.
