“New state laws could guide judge’s ruling in local suit over sex assault investigations”
A federal judge appears to be nearing a decision in a class action lawsuit that accuses the city of Austin and Travis County of not responding adequately to complaints from eight women who say they were sexually assaulted while their attackers got off scot-free.
News about Moore’s appointment did not sit well with the women’s lawyer, Jennifer Ecklund, who on Monday criticized Moore for publicly defending her First Assistant, Mindy Montford, who discussed the case without permission with a family friend of one of the plaintiffs.
“I think the victims we represent are understandably concerned that the person appointed should be someone who cares for and intends to be a voice for victims and holding perpetrators accountable,” Ecklund said. “Right now, I don’t think women in Travis County hold that view about Ms. Moore.”
