John Martin Receives Louis B. Potter Lifetime Professional Service Award from DRI – The Voice of the Defense Bar

Dallas – Thompson & Knight LLP is pleased to congratulate John H. Martin on his selection as this year’s recipient of the Louis B. Potter Lifetime Professional Service Award from DRI – The Voice of the Defense Bar (“DRI”). The award honors an individual who exemplifies professional service and the highest professionalism by going beyond the observance of the legal profession’s ethical rules and serving the best interests of clients and the general public; demonstrating respect for the law and preserving the decorum and integrity of the judicial process; enhancing the image of the legal profession; supporting education about the law and legal system; and fostering respect and trust among lawyers.

Mr. Martin is Senior Counsel in Thompson & Knight’s Trial Practice Group in the Firm’s Dallas office. A defense lawyer for more than 40 years, he focuses his practice on mass tort and catastrophic injury, aviation, pharmaceutical, professional liability, and general business and commercial litigation. A lifelong Dallas resident, he joined the Firm immediately upon graduation from The University of Texas School of Law, with honors, in 1974.

He has been a member of DRI since 1984 and served on its Board of Directors and as President (2007-2008). In addition to service to DRI, Mr. Martin was President of the National Foundation for Judicial Excellence (2013-2014), a charitable foundation addressing important legal policy issues affecting the law and civil justice system. He also served as President of Lawyers for Civil Justice, President of the Texas Association of Defense Counsel, and Chair of the Dallas Association of Defense Counsel. Also, Mr. Martin served for many years on the Texas Supreme Court Rules Advisory Committee and State Bar of Texas Court Rules Committee. He is a Fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers, the International Academy of Trial Lawyers, and the American Bar Association. In addition, he is a Life Fellow of the Texas Bar Foundation, and a Board Member and Research Fellow of The Center for American and International Law.

DRI is an international 22,000-member organization of defense lawyers and corporate counsel focused on issues important to the defense bar and civil justice system as a whole.
