Thompson & Knight’s Emily A. Parker Receives Distinguished Service Award from ABA Tax Section

DALLAS — The law firm of Thompson & Knight LLP is pleased to announce Emily A. Parker has been selected to receive the 2019 Distinguished Service Award, the highest honor awarded by the American Bar Association’s Section of Taxation.

Ms. Parker is Senior Counsel in the Tax Practice of the Firm’s Dallas office. She represents taxpayers in IRS audits and appeals proceedings, state tax audits and hearings, and federal and state tax refund and deficiency litigation. She also advises on federal income tax and Texas tax planning, with expertise in taxation of natural resources and partnership and corporate transactions involving the petroleum industry. Emily has represented clients in a number of precedent-setting cases that decided important industry issues and developed previously unsettled issues of tax law.

Ms. Parker joined Thompson & Knight as the Firm’s first female attorney in 1973 with a degree from SMU Dedman School of Law. She became the Firm’s first female Partner in 1979, and within her first 28 years of practice at Thompson & Knight as a tax lawyer, she became the first woman to serve as Practice Group Leader, Hiring Partner, and member of the Management Committee.  Ms. Parker briefly left the Firm from 2002-2004 to work for the Internal Revenue Service in Washington, D.C., taking on the role of Acting Chief Counsel and Deputy Chief Counsel. Following her return to Thompson & Knight, she again served as a member of the Management Committee and served as the Firm’s first female Managing Partner.

Among her accolades, Ms. Parker was the first woman to receive the Outstanding Texas Tax Lawyer award (2012), the highest award given by the State Bar of Texas Tax Section. She has also been honored by The Best Lawyers in America© by Woodward/White Inc. The American Bar Association’s Section of Taxation Distinguished Service Award is reserved for individuals who have had a distinguished career in taxation and who have provided an aspirational standard for all tax lawyers to emulate.
