T&K Attorney Contributes to Sedona Conference Commentary on Data Privacy in M&A

Dallas –The Sedona Conference Working Group on Data Security and Privacy Liability recently published its Commentary on Data Privacy and Security Issues in Mergers & Acquisitions Practice for public comment; Thompson & Knight attorney Craig Carpenter was part of the drafting team for the Commentary, which provides practical guidance on data privacy and security issues that should be considered in a potential merger or acquisition. The Commentary is intended for professionals working in M&A as well as individuals handling post-deal integration and is open for public comment through August 7, 2018. Mr. Carpenter is an Associate in Thompson & Knight’s Intellectual Property Practice Group and a member of the Firm’s Data Privacy and Cybersecurity initiative. His practice focuses on intellectual property, technology, and data privacy and security law. His extensive experience in the cybersecurity and data privacy arena enables him to counsel clients in matters involving the protection of confidential information, including preparing for, investigating and responding to data breaches, data collection and use, and data security in M&A transactions. Mr. Carpenter advises clients on technology development and licensing, intellectual property acquisition and sale, data collection and privacy, and online marketing and branding. He also assists clients with Internet-related compliance and enforcement issues, including website and social media policies and terms of use, digital and social advertising review, sweepstakes and promotions, and Internet take-downs and IP enforcement.

Recognized for his legal expertise, Mr. Carpenter has been selected for inclusion in Texas Rising Stars® by Thomson Reuters (2016-2017) for his intellectual property practice. He frequently participates in speaking engagements related to data privacy, cybersecurity, and social media, among other topics. In addition to his participation with The Sedona Conference Working Group, Mr. Carpenter is an active participant in numerous professional and civic organizations, including the SMU Cyber Security Advisory Board and the Dallas Bar Association – Intellectual Property Section. He attended SMU Dedman School of Law where he received a J.D., cum laude, in 2012.
