Art Law

We represent and advise clients on a broad range of matters and legal issues in the art world, including sales and management of collections, copyright protection, taxation, estate planning, title disputes, insurance, sales and commission agreements, and consignment and exhibition agreements.

From tax and transactional issues to intellectual property rights to ownership disputes, members of the art community regularly encounter increasingly difficult challenges regarding the art market. Our art law team has a keen understanding of the legal issues that exist in this complex arena. We are equipped to provide our clients with experienced counsel and representation in a wide array of areas including issues related to taxation, estate planning, sales and commission agreements, consignment and exhibition agreements, copyright protection, and title disputes, among other art-related issues. Members of our team frequently lecture on the intersection of art and the law.

Our experienced team of art law attorneys is strongly rooted in the arts community, making us uniquely qualified to handle all types of art-related issues and disputes. Michael Heinlen, who leads the team, has a Ph.D. in Art History, taught Medieval and Northern Renaissance Art History for several years at the University of North Texas, and is a frequent speaker on various art law topics.
